The
Three Dosha : Vata, Kapha and Pitta
|
|
Vata is constituted
by the element earth and air, and it is responsible for
entire body movements and mind activities, ie, blood
circulation, respiration, excretion, speech, sensation,
touch, hearing, natural urges, formation of foetus, the
sexual act, retention and feeling like fear, anxiety,
grief and enthusiasm.
|
|
|
An excess of rajas specially among men,
may hamper the vata, impeding the body
function and giving rise to diseases like hypertension,
nervousness and sleep related disorders.
|
|
Pitta comes from fire and responsible for vision,
digestion, hunger, thirst, heat regulation, softness and
luster, cheerfulness, intellect and sexual vigor.
Kapha comes from the basic elements earth and
water, and it constitutes all the solid structure of the
body. It is responsible for binding, firmness,
heaviness, sexual potency, strength, forbearances and
restraints.
According to Ayurvedic principle of health, the body is constituted of five
elements - ether, air, fire, water and earth. These elements give rise to
the three bodily humor - Vata, piatta and kupha.
These three govern all physical and mental function of body. An equilibrium
of these three is essential to maintain good health, vitality and resistense
to maladies.
These three are interrelated and interdependent and
altering constantly on this ever changing universe. The
disturbance in one dosha affects the other, and if not attended to, all the
humor slowly vitiate. For example, excess of vata dries up kapha in the
body. Vata is from eher and air, and like these two elements, it is
mobile and all pervasive.
Constituent element of Kapha is water. The wind dries up water. A
person with vitiated vata will often have dry skin or dry throat, because
the excess of vata hinders the excretory functions of the cells, which is
domain of kapha.
