Kundan Lal Sehgal :

Every person who love Indian classical songs or fond of Old Indian film music and songs, must be familiar with one of the legends of Indian film music, Mr. Kundan Lal Sehgal.One of legend who never been forgotten by the Indian Cinema or Indian Cinema lovers.

He was born in hindu/khatri faimly in Jammu in 12th April. Father Mr. Amarchand Sehgal was working with Maharaja Pratp Singh. Mr Kundan Lal Sehgal was predicted as good singer by Maharaja when he gave a rendition of Meera Bahjan in Maharaja Pratap Singh`s court.By this time sehgalji didnt have formal trainning of music, his oice is blessed by his mother. But sometime after he come into contact with Ustaad Faiyyaz Khan.After listening to K.L. Saigal song, Khan Saheb later said "I have no knowledge with me to make you a better singer than you are."

But Alas! this great voice is hidden form the people for some years because of his family worries. Later by advice of some saint to explore his voice, he went to Calcutta. But before become the stardom he work as a Railway clerk, as a hotel manager and as a salesman too in typewriter company.He sangs many song in begali films too. After that he cam to Bombay, to make his destiny in films.

Kundan Lal Saigal`s Destiny starts in 1932 with signing as assignment with a New Theater. His carrier started with some of the films like ubah Ke Sitare, Zinda Laash and Mohabbat Ke Aason. The first film from his stardom carrier starts was "ChandniDas"  which songs Prem Ki Ho Jai make him a star of Hindi Cinema.Some of his better known movies are Anokhi Ada, Anmol Ghari. Naushad Sahab was the composer for them and these movies did very well. (One song which i am sure most people will recall from Anmol Ghari is with Noorjahan, "Awaaz dey kahaan hai, duniya meri jawaan hai". 

Mr. K L Sehgal has a very good looking personality like a superstar. In the earlier days of Indian Cinema, the Actor of the film sings his own song , so Mr Kundan start acting in films like Tansen, Devdas etc. This film Devdas was first ever made in hindi films after that "Devdas" came acted by another legend of hindi cinema Mr Dilip Kumar and the third Devdas came which is acted by Mr Sahrukh Khan. He was a cult hero and defined Indian film music for a long time.

Till 1946, From 1932 in Hindi cinema was called K L Sehgal's Musical Era. His one song which breaks all record at that time was "Babul mora naihar chooto he jaay".

His voice was very deep, emotional and somewhat nasal. Many singer at that time were tried to copy his voice in his songs like earlier songs of Kishor Kumar, Punkaj mallik etc.
