Fragile X Syndrome

For
many new parents, this is a baffling phenomenon. Though a hereditary, it
present itself without an immediately visible link to the past.
Fragile X is family of generic conditions that can be inherited from any
of the previous generation. It is caused by mutation or change in a gene
on the X chromosome.
Chromosomes are the bunch of genes passes from one generation to another.
Male has one X and one Y chromosome where as female has both X chromosome.
One faulty gene may be carried down through many generations. The
generation in which it is fertilized, produce an offspring with Fragile X
Syndrome.

Fragile X Syndrome Impacts

Fragile
X Syndrome affects children in many ways. It can cause mental impairment,
learning disabilities along with a normal IQ. Many children with Fragile X
have problem with sensory integration. The symptoms include characteristics
physical and behavioral feature, delayed speech and language development.
Physical Characteristics :

C) Prominent forehead and square chin

E) Seizures
Behavioral Characteristics :
A) Developmental delays
B) Hyperactivity

A
blood test after the baby's birth and during pregnancy can tell is
the person is a carrier.Parental diagnosis (testing for the Fragile
X mutation in the body before it is born) is available to any person
shown to be a carrier of a fragile X mutaion.

Fragile
X testing is usually performed on the developing baby, using on of
two potential test:
Chronic villus sampling (CVS) is done by taking a tiny tissue
sample fro outside the sac where the fetus develops. |
|
Second
test is Aminocentesis, which is performed between 16 to 20
weeks of pregnancy. This involves
taking a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus
and examining it for birth defects. |
|
|
|
More male children are
effected than the female. one in 2500 perhaps and one in 5000 girls.
The symptoms are lot milder in girls because they have two X
chromosomes. |

When should a child
be test for Fragile X syndrome: |
