Mulk
Raj Anand, was born in Pehawar
district in 12 December 1905, which is now locatd in Pakistan.
His intitial studies done in Khalsa Collage, Amritsur, after he has
completed his graduation from Punjab Umiversity with houners in 1924.
He was educated at Cambridge and London universities in the 1920s,
receiving his PhD in 1929. Dr Anand among the first writer who incorporate
punjabi and hindi idioms in his write ups.Mulk Raj Anand became
particularly influential when he settled in Bombay and along with a group
of friends fonded MARG (Modern Architectural Research Group), which from
1946 onwards started producing a journal that continues to this day as
India's oldest publication devoted to both the visual and performing arts
as well as architecture and urban desing.
He is also participated actively with freedom fighters.In 1930 and 1940 he
devided his time between India and England. Anand's literary career was
launched by family tragedy, instigated by the rigidity of the caste
system. His first prose essay was a response to the suicide of an
aunt, who had been excommunicated by his family for sharing a meal with a
Muslim. His first main novel, Untouchable, published in 1935, was a
chilling exposé of the day-to-day life of a member of India's untouchable
caste. It is the story of a single day in the life of Bakha, a
toilet-cleaner, who accidentally bumps into a member of a higher caste.
He Become the director of Kutub Publishers and also Chaian of Lalit Kala
Academy from 1965 to 1970.
Also, serves as president of Lokayata Trust for creating a community and
cultural center in the village of Hauz Khas, New Delhi, India.
